Meet the Ellweins

How it All Began

Hi! I’m Todd Ellwein. I grew up in San Diego and Omaha. My parents were both raised in small towns in South Dakota and instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of education.

My Journey

I majored in Political Science at Carleton College and then moved to Mexico to begin what became a decades-long journey in the field of education. I started as a middle and high school social studies teacher at a new international school in Mexico City. After graduate studies at Columbia University, I returned to Mexico and served as the founding dean of a bilingual university. For eight years I was an operations and academic leader for a comprehensive U.S. university. Prior to moving to Mt. Lebanon, I led a public-private partnership that recruited first-year international students to a flagship university in the south and immersed them into the academic and cultural life of the university.

I currently serve as a general manager for a NYC-based education technology company. I help the University of Pittsburgh develop and market hybrid and online academic programs to expand student access to Pitt’s high-quality graduate programs. I am responsible for the strategic vision and day-to-day leadership of the partnership and collaborate daily with Pitt stakeholders in academics, admissions, marketing, student affairs, and finance.

My Family

My wife Sally and I met as undergraduate students at Carleton College, then reconnected in graduate school in New York. We moved to Mt. Lebanon in the summer of 2019. Like many newer residents, we were attracted to this community because of its excellent schools. Having lived in several different locations, we are excited to make Mt. Lebanon our permanent home. Sally serves as a director for the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, leading United Way’s work to help financially struggling individuals and families meet their basic needs and move towards financial stability. Our twin 15-year old boys, Henry and Jack, attend Mt. Lebanon High School. Henry plays tennis, runs cross-country and enjoys piano and learning Japanese in his spare time. Jack also runs cross-country for the high school. He loves drawing, playing guitar, and producing music. He’s also a big animal lover and has become the primary caretaker of our family’s 16 year old pug, Otis Fitzgerald.

We look forward to meeting more community members.
